Cultural Section: Art, Literature, Cinema and Music

The Cultural Section of Scotland's Catalan Centre organises events, talks and debates on various subjects which are, either directly or indirectly, related to Catalan culture.

The Cultural Section enjoys the invaluable collaboration of the Hispanic Languages Department of the University of Edinburgh's School of Languages and Cultures.

As examples of events organised in recent years, we would like to highlight several talks such as the commemoration of the Catalan writer Mercè Rodoreda's centenary, or those on aspects of the painter Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. We have also had experts on the Spanish Second Republic and the Civil War, as well as organised, together with Edinburgh's Filmhouse, a Catalan cinema cycle which included works by the director Bigas Luna and an exhibition of prints of Salvador Dalí's work. We have also had the privilege of receiving Catalan literary personalities such as the poet Jordi Larios, who read extracts from his latest work.

Every April, we organise a literary event around the Sant Jordi festivity to celebrate the Catalan Day of the Book, at which we normally enjoy a talk, reading and debate. Also, in November 2009, the Cultural Section took part in the organisation of the two-yearly Anglo-Catalan Society Conference, with whom we keep narrow links.

We are currently working towards expanding our project to include more cultural events in the fields of music and drama.

For information on forthcoming events organised by the Cultural Section of Scotland's Catalan Centre, please refer to the Events Calendar.
